A unique regional hunting artifact is the Lake Poygan Gunning box.  These were widely used on all the lakes of the lake Winnebago area of central Wisconsin.  The earliest examples date back to 1870 and some hunters still use them today.  This shell box sat on the floor of the hunting skiff and was used to hold the hunters shotgun safely off the bottom of the boat while paddling or poling the wild rice beds or along the edge of floating bogs when jump shooting ducks.  Many styles were made.  Every hunter had a specific idea of what was needed to keep his shotgun shells, calls, and lunch dry.  No other area in North America had anything to match this classic hunting item.  Lift Lid Style, Box 9” x 9” x 8 ½”  Circa 1950’s
